Commentary
Notes:
- Joseph Carnahan — a third schoolmaster in as many years, following John Schrom, Henry Casey, and William Jones. Carnahan is a distinctly Irish surname — Scots-Irish in origin, common in the mid-Atlantic colonies by the 1770s. The succession of schoolmasters with increasingly Irish names — Casey, Jones, Carnahan — reflects the demographic shift we’ve been observing throughout Elizabeth’s book.
- “In part” — unlike the previous receipts which were “in full,” this is only a partial payment, suggesting either Elizabeth was behind on school fees or the full term’s payment was being made in installments.
- £-5:0 — five shillings, same monthly fee charged by William Jones.
- November 12, 1772 — a mid-term payment, consistent with a fall school session beginning in September or October.
- The rapid turnover of schoolmasters — Schrom, Casey, Jones, Carnahan across roughly five years — suggests either the position was poorly paid and hard to fill, that these were itinerant teachers moving between communities, or that the Kinderhook school district was still informally organized with teachers coming and going seasonally.
- Arent and Burger still in school — Arent now 11, Burger perhaps 8-9, receiving consistent if somewhat irregular education under a succession of teachers.
