Commentary
Notes on the Obverse:
This document is severely deteriorated and must be approached with caution. What can be recovered:
- Header: Clearly headed Elizabeth Huyck — Haer Boek (Her Book) with a figure of £23:9:9 — suggesting this is Elizabeth Huyck’s own account summary or personal financial record
- Names visible:
- Elizabeth — appearing multiple times
- Maycke — again, likely her daughter
- Huyck — family name recurring
- Burger — likely her son Burger
- Henryed — possibly Hendrick/Henry
- Peter — possibly Peter Vosburgh
- Figures visible:
- £23:9:9 — the main heading figure
- Various partial sums: 3:3:10, £1:13:4, 14–7½, 19, etc.
Significance: The heading “Haer Boek” — Her Book — is remarkable. This appears to be Elizabeth Huyck’s own personal account book page or a summary of her accounts — making her not merely a passive subject of estate documents but an active financial manager in her own right. The figure £23:9:9 may represent her personal share or balance from the estate settlement.
What cannot be read reliably:
The severely deteriorated condition means most of the figures and many of the names are fragmentary. The numberss scattered across the page appear to be rough calculations — additions, multiplications, unit prices — consistent with a cover used as a scratch calculation surface, as we saw with the first account book.
Overall impression: This appears to be the cover of one of Elizabeth’s account books used as a calculation surface, with family names — Maycke, Burger, Elizabeth herself — appearing alongside figures in what may be household budget calculations or account summaries. The “Haer Boek” inscription is the clearest statement of ownership.
Notes on the Reverse:
- A construction cost summary — this is almost certainly the detailed breakdown of the £200 building cost paid to Dirck Huyck on November 5, 1770 for the house and barn on the homestead lot, as required by Andries’s will. Elizabeth recording exactly what the one-third share of £200 was spent on.
- Stone work at £28:19:0 — by far the largest single item, consistent with the stone breaking and masonry work we saw James de Goljer performing in the first account book, and the 200 rough stones purchased in Johannis Huyck’s account.
- Planks appearing six times — a total of roughly £15 in lumber, consistent with major barn and house construction.
- Nails — £3:19:5 combined — a substantial quantity of nails for the construction.
- “Vlokke van de Schour” — flocking or thatching of the barn roof — a significant item at £2:2:0.
- Andries J. Huyck — £10:14:6 — Andries J. Huyck as primary carpenter, consistent with his appearing throughout the individual receipts.
- Hun Breke — £3:14:0 — a new name, possibly a specialized tradesman — Breke a surname not previously seen.
- “Sander Flemminhelder Gogroven” — Sander Flemminhelder dug/excavated at £0:15:0 — Sander being a Dutch diminutive of Alexander, Flemminhelder possibly Flemming-Helder or a similar compound surname.
- Total £78:4:10 — representing one third of approximately £235 total construction cost, slightly higher than the £200 paid to Dirck, suggesting either some costs were borne separately or the final settlement involved negotiation.
This document completes the construction record begun in the 1769 carpenter’s bill for Andries’s barn — from the initial timber hewing through the full construction costs, the Huyck farm’s major building project of 1769-1771 is now fully documented.
