Commentary
This is one of two memorandums, same date, referring to the contents of Andries Burger Huyck's chest and other estate items.
Notes on the Obverse:
- Joseph Woodsbridge and Rychaert Huyck — new names in the archive. Rychaert Huyck — Richard Huyck — son of Lambert, a family member not previously seen. The bond dated February 4, 1773 matches exactly the bond interest calculation we saw earlier — £43:0:8 remaining — confirming that document was indeed related to this bond.
- Hugh Ames — another new name, owing £1:12 on a note.
- The Andries L. Huyck bond reappears — listed here as still in the chest despite the other memorandum this day saying it was returned to Johannis Huyck and Hendrick A. Van Dyck. The two memoranda were written on the same day and possibly the bond was distributed after this inventory was taken.
- The household goods paint a vivid picture of Andries’s domestic life:
- 3 beaver hats — expensive items, one sold to Johannis Huyck for £2
- 4 feather beds, 4 straw beds — a substantial household, suggesting Andries had farm workers or family living with him
- 6 chairs with high backs, mirror, tea table — a comfortable, even refined domestic interior
- Large Bible, sermon book, prayer book — confirming his devout character
- 3 small spinning wheels — textile production in the household
- Dutch rifle and tow/hemp rifle — two firearms, the Dutch rifle already noted in the previous memorandum as taken by Hendrick A. Van Dyck
- 2 mousetraps — a charming domestic detail
- “Een Deer Boets” — a pair of riding boots, consistent with the saddle and horseback riding equipment.
- “Maycke weggenomen” — Maycke took a wall hanging and a spread — this is almost certainly Maycke Huyck, Jacobus’s daughter and Elizabeth’s child, now old enough to be receiving household goods from her great-uncle’s estate. Maycke was born in 1758 so she would be about 16 in 1774 — young to be receiving estate goods independently, suggesting Elizabeth authorized it.
- “Een Touwerhil Roer” — a tow/hemp rifle, possibly a flintlock with a tow/hemp touch hole cover — an unusual item worth noting.
The combination of fine household goods — beaver hats, feather beds, high-backed chairs, mirror, tea table — with practical farm items confirms Andries living comfortably on the Kinderhook patent lands.
Notes on the Reverse:
- A loan receipt — Michiel Goes acknowledging receipt of household goods to use during his tenancy, to be returned when the lease expires.
- “Michiel R. Goes” — his full name now confirmed as Michiel R. Goes, signing with his mark — illiterate, consistent with many of the farmers in this archive.
- Burger Huyck Jr. — signing as witness, confirming his continued presence on the farm property.
- “John Huyck” — a new signature — John Huyck, possibly a Johannis Huyck using an anglicized first name. (It could be any of several Johannis Huycks in the family at this time. jhc)
- The goods listed are modest household items — cracked pots, old buckets, half-worn sacks — the practical everyday equipment of a working farm rather than the finer items inventoried on the obverse. These were the working goods Michiel Goes needed to run the farm during his tenancy.
- “2 Jaar Brand Yzers” — two years’ worth of fire irons — an unusual quantification, possibly meaning enough fire irons to last two years, or fire irons that had been in use for two years.
