Commentary
The handwriting looks familiar but I don't think it is in Elizabeth HUyck's hand.
Notes on Obverse:
- “Goods left in the hands of Michiel Goes” — this is a handover inventory, Elizabeth entrusting the farm’s livestock and equipment to Michiel Goes for management. The date — March 22, 1774 — is significant. Elizabeth is systematically transferring farm management to others, consistent with declining health or a planned departure from active farming.
- Burger Huyck Jr. — described as having the horses “at present” — Burger, brother of Jacobus. He is apparently involved in managing the horses, possibly as a farm hand or tenant.
- The livestock valuation — £62:10 — a substantial herd: 7 horses, 10 milk cows, 4 oxen, 20 sheep, and at least 8 pigs. This confirms the Huyck farm was operating at significant scale even in 1774.
- Two plough types — a German plough and an English plough — reflecting the mixed cultural heritage of the farm’s equipment, the German plough likely being the traditional Dutch/German style used since the family’s earliest days, the English plough a newer acquisition reflecting anglicization.
- “Een Wint Meulon voor kore Schoon te maken” — a winnowing machine for cleaning corn — a relatively sophisticated piece of agricultural equipment for 1774, suggesting the farm was investing in labor-saving technology.
- The detail of wear — “about half worn,” “nearly worn out,” “the irons toward thin” — the condition of each item recorded with characteristic precision, protecting both Elizabeth and Michiel Goes from future disputes about the state of the equipment.
- “Een Goede Jak Slee” — a good jack sleigh — the farm’s winter transport equipment inventoried alongside the summer implements.
This document is essentially Elizabeth preparing to step back from active farm management — transferring a substantial operation to Michiel Goes’s care in March 1774, just one year before Hendrick A. Van Dyck was settling her accounts in March 1775.
Notes on Reverse:
- A systematic livestock liquidation — Elizabeth selling off the farm’s animals in March 1774, with Michiel Goes and Hendrick A. Van Dyck acting as agents for the sales. This strongly suggests Elizabeth was winding down active farming operations, consistent with the handover inventory on the obverse.
- Hendrick A. Van Dyck — Elizabeth’s Van Dyck relative, now appearing as a livestock sales agent. Likely the same Hendrick A. Van Dyck who bought woollen cloth from Elizabeth’s shop in December 1770 — the Van Dyck family stepping in increasingly to help manage Elizabeth’s affairs.
- New names as buyers:
- Mattys Emmerig — buying a mare for £10
- Rubin Monrou — possibly Reuben Monroe, buying a horse for £9
- Jurje Adam Smit — George Adam Smith, buying a foal for £2:8
- Hendrick Van Schaack Els — buying a yearling for £3
- Jacob Smit and Abraham J. Van Vleck acting as recommenders/intermediaries
- “Per Recomedatie… als pr Noot” — “per recommendation… as per note” — the sales were made on the recommendation of trusted community figures, with promissory notes rather than cash, consistent with the credit economy throughout the archive.
- Ownership clarified — the lower section makes a crucial distinction:
- One horse valued at £10 belonged to Andries — part of his estate still unresolved
- “The Yellow” — a specific horse kept back for sale, named by its color
- All others belonging to the stock of Jacobus — the main herd was Jacobus’s estate property, managed by Elizabeth as executrix
- Total livestock sales visible: £10 + £9 + £2:8 + £21 + £1:10 + £3 = £47 — a substantial liquidation, supplementing the farm’s commercial income as Elizabeth prepared to step back.
- “Een met Een Seer oog” — “one with a sore eye” — a lame cow carefully noted in the inventory, Elizabeth’s characteristic precision in recording the condition of assets.
This document, combined with the obverse, paints a vivid picture of March 1774 — Elizabeth methodically transferring the farm’s management to Michiel Goes, liquidating livestock through trusted agents, carefully distinguishing between Andries’s estate assets and Jacobus’s estate assets, and preparing for a transition that would culminate in Hendrick A. Van Dyck settling her accounts in March 1775.
The archive is now clearly in its final chapter — Elizabeth’s last year of active management before her death or incapacitation.
