Commentary
Notes on the Obverse:
- Matteis V. alstyn — the creditor, likely a merchant or draper.
- "el duytchasgot" — el is an ell (a cloth measure), duytchasgot likely Duits goed — "German/Dutch goods," a common description for imported cloth.
- "saloen" — fine dressed cloth, possibly saai or a salon-quality fabric.
- "Copere Knoope" — copper buttons, sold by the dozen — a typical dry goods item.
- "harte belle" — deerskin hides (hart = hart/deer, vel = hide/skin). The fur and hide trade was still very much alive in Albany in 1730.
- "Broer Jan" — "Brother Jan" — likely a literal brother acting as intermediary, or possibly a familiar nickname for a business associate.
- "dokter goeldon" — doctor's fees paid in guilders — a fascinating glimpse of medical payment practice.
- "Posse belle" — coarse hides or possibly possen vellen — rough pelts offered as partial credit against the debt.
- The final balance of £3:15:0 remaining due suggests Huyck was carrying debt into late 1731.
Notes on the Reverse:
- The language is notably emphatic — "everything we have ever had to do with one another" is a sweeping, final settlement formula, going beyond the usual ten volle van alle rekeningen. It suggests either a long and complex relationship being formally closed, or perhaps some prior friction that made a comprehensive release desirable.
- Matteus Van Alstyn — The Van Alstyn family was a well-established Albany Dutch clan, with roots in the Kinderhook and Claverack areas of Columbia County.
- Two years to settle — the debt ran from September 1730 to September 1732, with partial payments along the way. The final closing took exactly two years to the month from when the account was opened.
- He signed it twice — Matteus wrote his name both mid-document and at the close, giving it extra legal weight.
