Commentary
Text written in a hand other than that of the signatories. What is Aron Huyck's role here (this document having come down through his family)?
Notes:
- A bill of exchange — Derick Van Slyck directing Benjamin Van Lown to pay Amos Castel £1:5:0, with Derick promising to charge it against the account Van Lown has with him. A slightly more sophisticated financial instrument than a simple promissory note — essentially a primitive check drawn on a third party.
- “I will in Doast the same on [the account] that I have against you” — Derick promising to credit Van Lown’s account with the £1:5:0 paid to Castel — so Van Lown pays Castel, and Derick reduces Van Lown’s debt to him by the same amount. A triangular settlement consistent with the credit economy throughout the archive.
- Derick Van Slyck — Christina’s brother or other Van Slyck family member, signing as the drawer of the bill.
- “Aron Huyck” — Arent conducting normal commercial business in the summer of 1794, dying sometime in 1795. The blank promissory note forms naming Burger J. Huyck and Samuel Van Slyck as administrators of his estate would then follow in 1795-96, consistent with the estate administration documents we’ve seen.
