1771 January 16th Received of Elizabeth Huyck the Sum of two pound five Shillings in full paid by me Andries Jo Huyck
Commentary
Notes:
- £2:5:0 — a much smaller sum than the £29:13:6 of November 6th last (BH070), suggesting this is a separate and distinct transaction rather than a continuation of the carpentry payment.
- Six weeks after the previous receipt — the November payment was described as carpenter’s work on the house and barn. This January payment likely represents something different — possibly:
- A small additional carpentry job
- A settlement of a personal account between Elizabeth and Andries J.
- Payment for winter farm labor
- Related to the hay deliveries we saw in the account book
- “In full paid” — again a complete discharge.
- Andries Jo Huyck signing consistently in his anglicized form, his signature becoming a reliable presence in the archive at this point.
- The frequency of payments to Andries J. Huyck — October 1769, November 1770, January 1771 — suggests he was a regular contractor and laborer for Elizabeth’s farm operation, likely the most trusted member of the extended family for practical work. His father Johannis’s chronic indebtedness to Jacobus apparently did not diminish Andries J.’s own standing and reliability.
