Commentary
Notes:
- Henry Casey was the schoolmaster — the same Henry Casy/Casey who appeared throughout the second account book (BH024) as a debtor buying snuff, cider, and cash advances from Elizabeth. He was simultaneously her children’s teacher and her customer — a beautifully circular relationship typical of this close-knit community.
- This resolves what had been a puzzle — we knew John Schrom was the schoolmaster from the earlier school bills, and Henry Casey appeared as a debtor in the account book. Now we see Casey was also teaching the children, suggesting either Schrom had been replaced by Casey or they taught at different times or in different sessions.
- “The widow Huyck” — Elizabeth formally identified by her social status as widow, consistent with the November documents.
- 12 shillings 2 pence — a modest school fee for the year-end settlement, consistent with the school records in the account book showing small quarterly payments.
- December 31, 1770 — a year-end settlement, Casey clearing his accounts as schoolmaster on the last day of the year.
- The dual relationship — Elizabeth as Casey’s creditor in the account book, Casey as her children’s teacher and occasional debtor — is a perfect encapsulation of how tightly interwoven commerce, education, and community were in 1770 Kinderhook.
