Commentary
Notes:
This is a rich document. Several things now become clear:
- The Huygh family structure — their father was Andries Hanse Huygh, and Burger and Johannis were brothers. There was also a Lambert Huygh (likely another brother) whose land adjoined to the north.
- A fifth share — Johannis is conveying his one-fifth part of an orchard/parcel at Pomponick. This strongly implies there were five Huygh heirs dividing Andries's estate — making Lambert, Burger, Johannis, and two others the likely children.
- The original 1679 deed — the title traces back to a conveyance from John Handrikse Bruyn to Andries Hanse Huygh dated July 12, 1679 — deep in the Dutch period, just six years after the English took New York. The Pomponick Marsh land had been in the family for over fifty years by this point.
- Three pounds ten shillings — a modest sum for a fifth share of an orchard, suggesting either the parcel was small or this was a family accommodation price between brothers.
- Johannis still signs with his mark — confirming he was illiterate, as suggested by the 1734 document.
- C. Van Dyck, Justice of the Peace — another Van Dyck in the Huyck orbit, consistent with the Arent Van Dyck who appeared earlier as Burger's agent.
The 1734 lease-and-release was Burger acquiring what appears to have been the main farm parcel. This 1736 quit claim was him then tidying up the orchard share — buying out Johannis's inherited fifth. The missing release deed and the other three siblings' shares may yet appear in the collection.
