Commentary
The handwriting on this document is unclear and Claude.ai's transcription seems suspect but the gist of the receipt seems ok. Van den Bergh's first name is unclear to me as is the signatories' name.
Notes:
- Arent Van den Bergh — another well-known Albany Dutch family name, again acting as Huyck's agent, just as Arent Van Dyck did in the 1729 Kinderhook receipt.
- "ten volle van allen rekon" — "in full of all reckonings/accounts" — the same settlement formula seen in the Kinderhook document.
- "Alyda Jenda" — this signature is unusual and somewhat uncertain. It could be a Portuguese or Sephardic Jewish name, not impossible in colonial Albany which had a small but documented Jewish merchant community. Alternatively it may be a phonetic rendering of a Dutch or German name I'm misreading.
- 15 guilders — a modest sum, suggesting a small outstanding balance being closed out.
