Commentary
Notes:
- Identical in form to Burger Jr.’s receipt — same date, same amount, same payers, same witnesses.
- Johannis signing in his own hand — unlike his father Burger Sr. who signed with a mark in the land documents, Johannis was literate.
- Willem Klaen now clearly readable as such — confirming our reading of the previous document.
- The three paying brothers — Andries, Jacobus, and Dirck — are consistently named, suggesting these three either inherited the land and assets while Burger Jr. and Johannis received cash legacies, or they were designated as executors responsible for paying out the bequests.
- Two of the three Fitzgerald documents now accounted for — the third is almost certainly Dirck Huyck’s receipt, or possibly Andries’s.
