Commentary
Notes:
- Volkert Van Den Bergh — not a son but Burger Sr.’s son-in-law, married to Catharena Huyck, Burger Sr.‘s daughter — now deceased by 1761. Volkert is receiving his late wife’s legacy on her behalf.
- £80 rather than £100 — Catharena’s bequest was smaller than those of her brothers, consistent with 18th century practice of daughters receiving somewhat smaller legacies than sons, often on the assumption that their husbands would provide.
- Catharena Huyck — a daughter of Burger Sr. now named for the first time, already dead by September 1761. Her death before her father’s estate was settled meant her legacy passed to her husband.
- “my Late wife Catharena his Daughter Decd.” — both the daughter and her father now deceased, Volkert collecting on behalf of his late wife’s estate.
- Folkert Vandenbergh — the same Van den Berg family we’ve seen throughout — Willem Van den Berg buying corn in the account book, Burger Van den Berg also appearing there. Now revealed as having a direct marriage connection to the Huyck family.
- This is the third Fitzgerald document — all three are estate legacy receipts from September 14, 1761, with John Fitzgerald and Willem Klaen as consistent witnesses throughout.
- Dirck Huyck confirmed again as one of the three paying brothers/executors.
So Burger Sr.’s known children now include: Andries, Jacobus, Dirck, Burger Jr., Johannis, and Catharena — at minimum six children. The will itself, if it survives in Albany County probate records, would give the complete picture.
