Commentary
Notes:
- Two children in school again — from mid-May to mid-October 1767, roughly five months, at a combined fee of £1:13:4. A higher total than the 1768 bill, consistent with a longer school term.
- John Schrom — the same schoolmaster as before, confirming a continuing relationship.
- Payment in wheat — rather than cash, Elizabeth is paying the school fees with wheat delivered to Thomas Wheeler — presumably a miller who would process the wheat and credit the value against the school bill. Another example of the in-kind payment economy throughout this archive.
- “2 Str. Wheat” — “2 strikes of wheat” — a strike being a dry measure, roughly equivalent to a bushel in some regions. Two deliveries of 2 strikes each.
- Thomas Wheeler — possibly related to Samuel Wheeler and Evert Wheeler who appear in the 1744 Kinderhook tax list — a Wheeler family mill or grain operation acting as intermediary.
- The arithmetic at the bottom — 47:3 and 23:7½ — suggests a running balance calculation, the wheat credits being offset against the school fees.
- This is the second school document addressed to Elizabeth — confirming her role managing household accounts and the children’s education. Two children in school consistently in both 1767 and 1768 — most likely the same two children in successive years.
