Albany March 10th 1740/1 Recd from Mr. Burger Huyck thirty Shillings which he paid me for Acct of Gilbert Livingston I say Recd by Ja Stevenson
Commentary
Burger Huyck, on his March 10th, 1741 trek to Albany, paid a couple bills; this and one to Debora Beeckman (BH096).
Notes:
- Burger Huygh is a son of Andries Hanse Huygh from the 1679 deed. This is a direct family continuity across 61 years. The same day as Debora Beeckman’s March 10 receipt (BH096), Burger is settling another account — suggesting he made periodic trips to Albany to conduct business in bulk, much as we saw with the June 1739 session.
- Gilbert Livingston — a member of the Livingston family, likely Gilbert Livingston (1690-1746), son of Robert Livingston the Elder. He was a Kingston merchant and lawyer. This would make him a brother of Robert Livingston Jr. who appears in the earliest document in this archive. The Livingston thread running through this archive from 1679 to 1741 is remarkably consistent.
- Ja Stevenson signing a personal receipt rather than an official document suggests he may have had a business or agency relationship with the Livingstons beyond his clerk role — possibly acting as their financial agent or attorney.
- Thirty shillings is a modest sum — this looks like a routine debt payment or account settlement rather than a major transaction.
