Translation
Albany, 1740/1, March 10 Received from Burger Huyck the sum of 4 pounds 19 shillings and 6 pence, to the balance of his account. Debora Beeckman
Commentary
Burger Huyck, on his March 10th, 1741 trek to Albany, paid a couple bills; this and one to Gilbert Livingston (BH053).
Notes:
- 1740/1 — March 10, 1741 new style, the split year convention still being applied this late is itself a small data point about Debora Beeckman’s conservatism or age — someone writing in Dutch and using the old calendar fraction in 1741 was likely of an older generation, holding to habits formed well before anglicization took firm hold in Albany.
- Debora Beeckman — almost certainly a relative of Johannis Beeckman Junr., the Albany mariner who sold Quash to Burger Huyck in June 1739. Possibly his wife, mother, or sister, settling a remaining balance on the same account — the £35 purchase price may have been paid in installments, with this £4 19s 6d being a final or partial balance.
- The document is in Dutch despite being written a year and a half after the English-language bill of sale — suggesting Debora was more comfortable in Dutch than English, or simply that Dutch remained the domestic commercial language for this family.
