Commentary
Notes:
- “2 scholars 1/4” — two scholars for one quarter — finally giving us the precise fee structure. £1:0:8½ for two children for one quarter works out to approximately 10s 4¼d per child per quarter — consistent with the fees we’ve seen across all the schoolmasters.
- January 12, 1773 — a new year payment, consistent with a winter quarter beginning around the new year.
- Carnahan still teaching — continuing from the November 1772 receipt, suggesting he stayed through at least the winter quarter of 1773, longer than some of his predecessors.
- £1:0:8½ — slightly more than the earlier school payments, possibly reflecting a small fee increase or a longer term.
- “viz.” — videlicet, Latin for “namely” — Carnahan using standard legal/commercial abbreviation, suggesting some formal education on his part.
- The school record is now remarkably complete across Elizabeth’s book — Schrom, Casey, Jones, Carnahan in succession, fees paid quarterly, two children consistently enrolled through 1769-1773.
