Translation
Kinderhook, August 19, 1744 I have received from Burger Huyck by the hand of Johannes Huyck [junior?] the sum of twenty shillings and six pence in full of all accounts — I say received by me, out of the smiths work that the said Eghberse has done for Margareta, the widow of Hendrick Gardenier Eghbert Ebberse

Commentary
Notes:
- Johannes Huyck acting as Burger’s agent here — likely Burger’s son, now old enough to conduct business on his father’s behalf. This is the first generational handoff we’ve seen in the archive.
- Eghbert Ebberse — a blacksmith (smitswerck) signing his own receipt, a craftsman rather than a merchant or landowner.
- Margareta, widow of Hendrick Gardenier — the Gardenier family appears in the 1744 Kinderhook tax list we found earlier[1], with Jacob, Arie, and Dirk Gardenier all listed as neighbors. Hendrick has died by 1744, leaving Margareta as widow, and Burger Huyck is paying her smithing bills — suggesting either a neighborly or landlord relationship.
- “babent Eghberse” — “the aforesaid Eghberse” — suggesting the smith had been previously named or was well known to both parties.
- Dutch still firmly in use in Kinderhook in 1744.
- [1] The tax list (http://hausegenealogy.com/kinderhook_%201744_tax_list.htm) shows Burger Huyck assessed at 32 pounds — the highest assessment among the Huyck family entries and one of the higher assessments in the entire district, confirming his substantial landholding. The other Huyck entries are Lambert (16), Johannis (4), a second Johannis (2), and Andries Jr. (1). For the Gardeniers, the list shows Hendrick Gardenier assessed at 15 pounds — meaning he was alive in 1744-45 when the list was compiled, which would place his death sometime after that and before August 1744 when Eghbert Ebberse’s receipt mentions Margareta as his widow. A tight window worth noting.
