Commentary
This is signed in the same ambiguous hand as the BH057 ~ 1738-10-15 Receipt, C. Ducolon to Burger Huyck for the Final Demand of All Account from 18 years earlier. An entry at the top of page 20 of Jacobus Huyck's account book in the name of "Doctr Claude Ducolon" clearly identifies this person's signature.
Notes:
- “Syn Soon Jacobus” — “his son Jacobus” — the first explicit naming of Burger Huyck’s son in the archive. We saw Johannes Huyck acting as Burger’s agent in the 1744 Eghbert Ebberse receipt, and now Jacobus appears as a second son. Burger had at least two sons by 1756.
- The settlement covers accounts for both Burger and Jacobus together, suggesting Jacobus was already conducting independent business by 1756 but still under his father’s financial umbrella.
- £4 — a round sum, consistent with a final settlement.
- The signature is difficult to read clearly — it appears to be a flourished initial or abbreviated name.
