Commentary
Receipt written by someone not the signer, Andries J. Huyck, who signs in an unsteady, unskilled, schoolboy's hand. Andries (b. about 1740) is the son of Johannis, nephew of Andries B. Huyck who died about this time.
Notes:
- “Andries B. Huyck Ein Companie” — “Andries B. Huyck and Company” — suggesting the affairs of Andries being administered by multiple parties, possibly Dirck and others acting together to help the ailing Andries.
- £10 14s — a substantial settlement, consistent with the bonds found in Andries’s inventory.
- Andries J. Huyck — son of Johannis — signing with his middle initial, consistent with the Dutch practice of using the father’s name as a middle initial or patronymic. Which confirms this is indeed the same Andries Johs. Huyck from the account book, now settling accounts from his uncle Andries B. Huyck in October 1769 near the latter's death in late 1769 or early 1770 — and just three months after buying corn from Elizabeth Huyck’s farm in July 1769.
- The archive is now clearly in the settlement phase of Andries’s estate (in this case shortly before his death in late 1769 or early 1770), following closely on Jacobus’s estate settlement in 1768.
