Commentary
This appears to be a page from an account book similar to the 30 page one and seems to follow that one chronologically - see also BH006 ~ 1772-04 & 07 Account Book Page of Elizabeth Huyck, BH100 ~ 1772 & 1773 Account Book Page of Elizabeth Huyck, BH103 ~ 1772 & 1773 Account Book Page of Elizabeth Huyck.
Notes to the Obverse:
- The memorandum — Elizabeth keeping a personal record of payments to Andries J. Huyck separate from the account book, suggesting she wanted to track these specifically. The amounts are small — 15 shillings and 7 shillings — consistent with errand payments rather than major carpentry work.
- “Voor de Plytoor” — uncertain reading. Could be pleister — “plaster” — suggesting payments related to house construction.
- School credit — Elizabeth crediting herself or Andries J. for “1 month school going of 2 children” — possibly reimbursement for accompanying or transporting the children to school, or a credit for some school-related service. An unusual entry.
- William Jones — a new name, entirely English, buying only snuff in tiny copper amounts — the smallest account in either book. Quickly settled and immediately reopened for more snuff — a habitual user like Henry Casey.
Notes to the Reverse:
- Michiel Goes — likely Jacobus’s maternal cousin, who appeared in the 1783 memorandum in the first account book owing 32 bushels of wheat from the 1780 crop. Here in 1772-73 he is buying retail goods from Elizabeth’s shop — confirming the ongoing Goes family commercial relationship with the Huycks.
- “wer ke linne” — working/course linen.
- Woollen cloth — continuing the textile retail trade we’ve seen throughout the second book.
- “Harte vel” — deerskin hide at 19s 6d — a valuable item, connecting back to the hide and leather trade running through both account books. Either Elizabeth was buying hides to send to the tanner Ebbers, or selling a processed hide as a retail item.
- Pair of stockings — a finished textile item, suggesting Elizabeth was either knitting or buying stockings wholesale for retail sale — consistent with the shop hypothesis.
- The account spans July 1772 to February 1773 — a modest but varied retail relationship with a family member.
