Commentary
Notes:
- Arent Huyck vs. Samuel Howe — a legal action in which Arent Huyck (spelled Aron here) is the plaintiff and Samuel Howe the defendant. Arent is now acting independently in his own name — born 1761, he would be 25 years old in August 1786, well past his majority.
- £3:9:11 — a modest sum, consistent with a small debt action rather than a major commercial dispute. The kind of case regularly heard before a Justice of the Peace rather than a higher court.
- “Jas. V. Alen Justice” — a member of the prominent Van Alen family of Kinderhook, acting as Justice of the Peace. The Van Alen family appears throughout this archive — Peter Van Alen was one of the 1731 patent partners.
- “A True Copy of my Records” — a certified copy of the court record, issued to Arent as evidence of the judgment in his favor.
- 1786 — the first document in the archive clearly dated after the Revolutionary War, now in the new United States. The legal framework has changed — Justice of the Peace courts continuing much as before, but under state rather than colonial authority.
- Samuel Howe — a new name, the defendant. English surname, consistent with the post-war demographic of Columbia County.
This document marks the beginning of Arent Huyck’s generation as the active principal in the archive — the child whose school attendance Elizabeth recorded so carefully in 1769-1771 is now a young man pursuing his own legal actions. The archive is entering its next chapter.
