Commentary
Notes:
- Cornelis Van den Burgh — now identified as a mason/bricklayer, explaining the large stone work figure of £28:19:0 in the construction cost memorandum (BH084, ~ 1772(?) Note, Barn Costs Summary by Elizabeth Huyck). The slight discrepancy between £25:10:3 here and £28:19:0 there suggests either additional stone work was done by others, or the figures cover different phases of the project.
- This connects back to page 3 of the second account book where “Cornelis b. Berg voor tietlesh — 25:10:3” appeared.
- “3 schepels corn at 4s 6d” — a partial in-kind payment, consistent with the mixed cash and commodity economy throughout the archive.
- “3 shillings withheld for Dirck Huyck” — a small deduction from Cornelis’s earnings on Dirck’s behalf, suggesting Dirck had a small outstanding claim against Cornelis, or that Dirck was entitled to a portion of the masonry costs being recovered. Given that Dirck’s son Burger was the beneficiary of the house construction, this deduction makes sense as a minor cost adjustment.
- £24:13:9 balance — a substantial sum still owed to Cornelis Van den Burgh for his masonry work, confirming the construction project generated significant unpaid debts that Elizabeth was working to resolve.
